Mira Costa cross country fares well at Woodbridge

Strong performances by Cosette Smith and Jeremy Davis pushed the Mira Costa boys' and girls' cross-country teams to strong finishes at Saturday's Woodbridge High School Cross-Country Classic.

Smith finished the three-mile race in a time of 18:27, finishing sixth out of a field of 154 runners in the Division II race. The senior's effort led Costa to seventh place out of 27 Division II schools.

Dorothy Le (38th in 19:49), Tracey Bremer (47th in 20:04), Shawna Benard (52nd in 20:07) and Allyson Scholl (65th in 20:34) rounded out Costa's top five finishers. Jennifer Weintraub (21:14) and Amy Cortina (21:21) also ran well. Stacey Pellegrino and Dennise Warnecke both broke 22 minutes in the Frosh-Soph race.

The Division II boys' races were broken down strictly by grade, but Costa still was able to shine. The junior class boys fielded a full team and recorded a ninth place finish out of 31 teams, led by Davis, who ran 15:31, finishing third out of a field of 146. Luke Gilroy (9th in 16:00) and Matt Cortina (36th in 16:50) also broke 17 minutes for the Mustangs.

The sophomore team performed especially well with an overall second place finish out of 29 teams. David Schreiner places 7th overall out of 187 runners in 16:20, with Lars Crampton (32nd in 17:12), Clayton Franklin (36th in 17:21), Todd Anderson (51st in 17:50) and Matthew Monahan (55th in 17:59) rounding out the top five.
