Forum set for next month in Campaign '99
by Robb Fulcher
With the November election beginning to loom, the Hermosa Beach Coordinating Council will present a candidates' forum 12:15 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 21 in the Kiwanis Youth Building, 2515 Valley Drive.
Lunch is available for $10, and will be served at 11:30 a.m. For reservations call Merle Fish at (310) 372-7674.
Candidates will field questions from those in attendance, the organizers of the coordinating council said.
The candidates that will appear on the ballot for two open city council seats are incumbent Sam Edgerton; Planning Commissioner Peter Tucker; community volunteer Fred Huebscher; longtime civic activist Katherine Bergstrom; businessmen Dallas Yost, Michael Keegan and Bill Sigler; Hermosa homeowner Scott D. Floyd; Disney "imagineer" Lauren M. Gezurian; Parks and Recreation commissioner Katheryn Dunbabin; and previous council candidate Donley Falkenstien, a community activist.
In the race for city treasurer, Bob Benz is stepping down from the city council to challenge incumbent John Workman.
Anti-oil activist Rosamond Fogg also will appear on the ballot for treasurer, although she has withdrawn her candidacy.
In the race for city clerk, incumbent Elaine Doerfling is running unopposed.
The race for the city school board will not take place. Two candidates -- Cary Bichlmeier and incumbent Catherine McCurdy -- filed papers to run for the two open seats, allowing the board to simply seat both candidates at its Dec. 8 regular meeting.
School board incumbent Vicki S. Garcia did not file to run for reelection.
State law does not allow write-in candidates for school board positions, making shoo-in elections superfluous. ER
