Football (4-1-1): Pounded Centennial 40-0 Friday on the road. The Sea Hawks scored in every quarter. The defense used its speed to completely shut down Centennial. Carlos Hernandez opened the scoring in the first, taking a pass from quarterback Chris Coleman in from 10 yards out. Junior tailback Herbert Blood added two first half scores as the Hawks opened up a 20-0 lead. Linh Pham added two scoring runs in the third for Redondo. Eddie Topps capped the scoring with a 41-yard dash in the final quarter. Next: at home versus Morningside (0-6) Friday at 7 p.m.
Girls' Volleyball (2-9): Lost 3-0 to South Torrance last Thursday. Lost 3-0 to Peninsula Tuesday.
Girls' Tennis (9-4): Doubled up South Torrance 12-6 last Thursday. The Sea Hawks swept every doubles match, led by Jenny Magana and Alisa Shtromberg.
Boys' Water Polo (9-10): Edged Beverly Hills 7-6 last Thursday. Bob Martinez scored four goals including the game winner. Danny Ching added two goals and Danny Bissell one for the winners.
Boys' Cross-country (2-0): Defeated Hawthorne and Inglewood by 15-50 scores last Thursday. David Bholat ran 18:21 to snag first place.
Girls' Cross-country (2-0): Smashed Hawthorne and Inglewood by 15-50 scores last Thursday. Daisy DeMelo placed first in 22:28.
Girls' Golf (9-0): Defeated Santa Monica 117-133 Monday at Penmar. Elena Robles fired a one-over 35 and Elena Kurokawa a two-over 36 for the unbeaten Sea Hawks.
Football (3-2-1): Dominated Santa Monica 43-17 in a Bay League contest Friday at SAMO. Two touchdown tosses from QB Anthony Centanni to flanker Morgan Ralls sparked the Mustangs to a 20-2 halftime lead. The scoring plays covered 77 and 25 yards. The Vikings pulled to within 20-9 after an interception was returned for a score, but Costa responded with a 32-yard field goal from Nick Wynand and a two-yard scoring run by Jon Hazard. Hazard and Chris Salazar added scoring runs in the fourth quarter to stretch Costa's lead to 43-9 before SAMO scored a late touchdown. Next: at Beverly Hills Friday at 3 p.m.
Girls' Volleyball (11-1): Placed fifth in Torrey Pines Tournament over the weekend. The Mustangs handled Redlands and La Jolla in three straight games Friday before falling to Notre Dame 3-2 in the quarterfinals Saturday. Costa lost the fifth game 16-14 using rally scoring. Costa captured fifth place with a 3-0 win over Lincoln of Stockton. Setter Lexy Beers was a standout for Costa, which also got good production off the bench from outside hitter/back row specialist Jamie Grass. Knocked off Torrance 3-0 on Monday. Claire Gillespie contributed five kills to the cause.
Girls' Tennis (5-5): Won first league game Tuesday, 12-6 over South Torrance. The doubles duo of Mandy Flader and Megan Malinsky swept their matches.
Boys' Water Polo (10-6): Beat El Segundo 9-3 last Thursday. Will Didinger had nine saves in a strong performance in goal. James Learned led the offense with four goals. Mike Block, Robert Jonas, Andy Krikorian, Cassady Roberts and Paul Flucke tallied one apiece. Smacked Beverly Hills 17-4 Tuesday. Max Frank scored the hat trick for Costa.
Boys' Cross-country (1-2): Lost 21-34 to South Torrance last Thursday. Jeremy Davis led Costa, running 18:03 over three miles.
Girls' Cross-country (2-1): Ran past South Torrance 24-31 last Thursday. Cosette Smith, Tracy Bremer and Shawna Benard captured the top three spots for the Mustangs.
X-ceL club volleyball tryouts: Beginning its second year, the club team is adding girls' 16's, 14's and 13's to its 18's team and is looking for athletes seeking to compete at their peak potential. Tryouts are Oct. 31 from 9-11 a.m. (14 and under) and from noon to 2 p.m. (18 and under). Tryouts cost $10 and will be held at El Camino College, 16007 Crenshaw Boulevard. El Segundo youth volleyball tryouts: For girls 11-16 and boys 11-12, the El Segundo Youth Volleyball Club is holding tryouts on Saturday, Oct. 23 and Sunday, Oct. 24 at the Hawthorne High School gym, 4859 W.
