Political Calendar

The Nov. 2 city election features nine candidates competing for two open seats on the city council, two candidates vying for the city treasurer's job, and a battle over Measure D, which would abolish the city's 6 percent utility users tax.

Following is a list of upcoming events:

Interactive forum

Michael Root of the Hermosa firm Seren Systems has put together an ongoing, interactive candidates forum for the Hermosa Beach Chamber of Commerce.

Available at www.hbchamber.net, the innovative forum allows users to quiz the candidates and to view the candidates' answers to other people's questions.

On the tube

An Oct. 13 candidates forum will be rebroadcast 7 p.m. Oct. 21, 25 and 28 on Century Cable 8.

The forum -- sponsored by the League of Women Voters of the Beach Cities, Women's Club of Hermosa Beach and Kiwanis Club of Hermosa Beach - featured candidates for city council and city treasurer, as well as advocates in the Measure D proposed utility tax repeal.

The forum is widely regard as the political season's most influential.

On the tube too

A forum held the same week and sponsored by the city's chamber of Commerce and Downtown Restaurant and Merchants Association, also will be shown on Channel 8 at 1 p.m. Oct. 22.

A forum held today, sponsored by the Coordinating Council, will be shown on Channel 8 at 7 p.m. Oct. 27 and 1 p.m. Oct. 29.

Candidates forum

Thursday, Oct. 21

The Hermosa Beach Coordinating Council presents a candidates' forum 12:15 p.m. in the Kiwanis Youth Building, 2515 Valley Drive.

Lunch is available for $10, and will be served at 11:30 a.m. For reservations call Merle Fish at (310) 372-7674.

Candidates will field questions from those in attendance.

Saturday, Oct. 23

City council candidate Michael Keegan offers complimentary breakfast and coffee as he invites you to "share your thoughts" with him 8 to 10:30 a.m. at the south corner home of 17th and the Strand.

Party Like It's 1999

Sunday, Oct. 24

Final party of the season for incumbent Sam Edgerton's city council campaign is 4 to 6:30 p.m. at the Edgerton home, 44 20th St.

A "moon bounce" will be available for the kids, and the Edgerton campaign will ask supporters to "address a few postcards to friends" asking them to vote for the candidate.

Some guest parking passes will be available. RSVP at 374-0193.

Meet the candidate

Sunday, Oct. 24

Council candidate Bill Sigler holds a "Town Hall Meeting" 10 to 11:30 a.m. in Room 12 of the Community Center, 710 Pier Ave. A complementary "light breakfast" will be served.

Residents will have an opportunity to ask questions and voice opinions.

Political golf ball

Sunday, Oct. 24

The Bill Sigler for Council campaign hosts a fund-raising "golf tournament and Cajun feast" 2 p.m. at the Lakes at El Segundo.

Entry for the golf tourney and dinner is $30. For dinner only it's $10.

A 5 p.m. get-together will follow at the home of Jon Molesky, 2210 the Strand, Hermosa Beach.

Sunday, Oct. 24

The Fred Huebscher for Council campaign holds a coffee with the candidate 3 to 6 p.m. at Expresso Wash, 509 Pier Ave. For information call 937-6300.

Candidates' debate, bake sale, concert

Wednesday, Oct. 27

A Hermosa Beach candidates' debate, bake sale, and music concert will be 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 27 at the Clark Recreation Building, Valley Drive and Eighth Street. The event is being hosted by Easy Reader and the environmental group V.O.I.C.E.

The debate has been scheduled at night to allow residents who work during the day to hear the candidate's views on issues such as the downtown, the utility users tax and zoning.

Council candidates scheduled to appear are Kathy Bergstrom, Kathy Dunbabin, Sam Edgerton, Donley Falkenstien, Fred Huebscher, Michael Keegan, Bill Sigler, Pete Tucker, and Dallas Yost.

Treasurer candidates Robert Benz and John Workman also will participate.

Former councilman and El Camino College Professor Lance Widman will moderate the debate. ER
