Devin Beck, 10, of Redondo Beach gets the ice pack treatment from Hermosa Beach paramedic Vince Buccolieri Sunday afternoon at the Hermosa Beach Skateboard park. Beck was skating to the park when he fell and bumped his head in the park parking lot. His helmet was in his backpack. Skateboarders are required to wear helmets in the park, but not on the street.

If dolphins are as gentle as widely believed, it's not because they lack the equipment to be aggressive. Los Angeles County Lifeguard Steve Gregg pulled this dolphin from the water in King Harbor last week. It apparently died peacefully, of old age. Photo by Dave Hunt
