Women surfers get radical in "Tropical Madness"

"Tropical Madness," a surf movie about the top 16 women professionals, screens Friday, Oct. 5 at the Hermosa Beach Community Center. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $4 adults/$2 students. South Bay filmmaker Lissa Ross captured Megan Abubo, Lisa Anderson, Rochelle Ballard, Layne Beachley showing why they rank among the world’s top surfers, of either sex, at the world’s top breaks. The Hermosa Community Center is located at the corner of Pier Ave., and Pacific Coast Highway in Hermosa Beach.

Hermosa Beach Youth Basketball

Boys and girls kindergarten through 8th grade in the beach cities are eligible to participate in the City of Hermosa Beach Youth Basketball League. Sign ups are Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 6-7 and 13-14 from 1-5 p.m. in Room 11 at the Community Center’s second floor, 710 Pier Avenue, Hermosa Beach. All games are played indoors in the Community Center Gym. The cost to play is $70 for the first player in a family, $65 for the second and $45 for each additional player, although some partial or full scholarships are available. The cost includes a uniform. Try-outs are mandatory, but everyone gets to play regardless of skill level. Try-outs are on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 20-21 and 27-28. For specific times when the try-outs will be held for boys and girls call 372-BALL.

Hermosa tennis open

The second annual Hermosa Beach Tennis Open is being held the weekends of October 6-7 and 13-14. Divisions include men’s and women’s singles (open, a,b,c,d), and doubles (a,b,c,d). Old Hometown 10K run

The 24th running of the Manhattan Beach Old Hometown 10K event is Saturday, October 6. The race starts 7:30 a.m. at 5th St. and Ardmore/Valley in Manhattan Beach.

Volleyball tryouts

Girls Volleyball Club Hot Shots tryouts are Sunday, Oct. 7 at American Martyrs Gym, 624 15th St., Manhattan Beach. Arrive 15 minutes early to sign a release form. Tryout times are: 13 and under Noon-2 p.m.; 16 and under 2-4 p.m.; and 18 and under 4-6 p.m. For more information call 318-9861.


Sunday swimming

The Urho Saari Swim Stadium, also known as "The Plunge" is now open on Sundays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. for lap swimming and Swimnastics, an instructed water exercise program. Admission is free to those with a current El Segundo recreation park card; $3 for lap swimming and $1 for Swimnastics for those without a card. The Plunge is located at 200 W.
