Following is the schedule for Saturday and Sunday: Saturday, 10 a.m. Chris New(#1) vs Todd Cohen(#4); Bill Hein(#2) vs Ron Brewer(#3) a classic serve and volley vs baseliner matchup at 9 a.m. Bill Hein took 4 1/2 hours to beat unseeded Eric Monick in the quarterfinals (3-6,7-6,7-6).

Men's A singles: Finals Sunday 2 p.m. #1 seed Collin Holmes vs. unseeded Eric Hunter. Men's B singles: Semi finals Saturday #1 seed Marty Friedman vs unseeded Henry Lim, #2 seed Bobby Cannon vs unseeded Chris Wilds. Men's C singles: Finals Sunday at 2 p.m. #1 seed Eric Buhlmann vs unseeded Jeff Jenks. D singles: Finals Sunday at 2 p.m. #1 seed Samar Deshmukh vs the winner of the semi-final match on Saturday of two good friends playing each other -- Dave Bader vs Mike Loeffler.

Women's C singles: Finals Sunday at 2 p.m. #1 seed Carol Severance vs #2 seed Sue Phan.

The Doubles will also be this weekend the 13th and 14th.

 

Triathlon festival

The "Day at the Beach" triathlon takes place at the Hermosa Beach Pier on Sunday, Oct. 14. The one-quarter mile swim, nine mile bike, and three mile run begins at 7:15 a.m. Packet pick-up is available on Saturday, Oct. 13 at the pier from 1-5 p.m. If you’re not participating, but want to be part of the action sign up as a volunteer. Hermosa Beach Youth Basketball

Boys and girls kindergarten through 8th grade in the beach cities are eligible to participate in the City of Hermosa Beach Youth Basketball League. Sign ups are Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 6-7 and 13-14 from 1-5 p.m. in Room 11 at the Community Center’s second floor, 710 Pier Avenue, Hermosa Beach. All games are played indoors in the Community Center Gym. The cost to play is $70 for the first player in a family, $65 for the second and $45 for each additional player, although some partial or full scholarships are available. The cost includes a uniform. Try-outs are mandatory, but everyone gets to play regardless of skill level. Try-outs are on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 20-21 and 27-28. For specific times when the try-outs will be held for boys and girls call 372-BALL.

SB Volleyball club

The 2001 tryouts for the South Bay Volleyball Club for girls 12 and 14 under are at 9 a.m.-noon, and for girls 16 and under at 2-5 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 14 . On Sunday, Oct. 28 tryouts for 18 and under take place from 2-5 p.m. and an all age makeup tryout is on Sunday, Nov. 4 from 10 a.m.-noon. Arrive a half-hour early to complete paperwork. Volleyball tournament benefit

The Redondo Beach communities of Knob Hill and Burnout are hosting a charity co-ed volleyball tournament on Saturday, Oct. 13 at the Knob Hill Volleyball Courts in Redondo Beach beginning at 8 a.m. The entry fee is $120 per 4-man team and all proceeds will go to the Twin Towers Fund, benefiting the families of NYC firefighters and police officers. Basketball leagues
