Ah Reality TV: Don’t you just love it when a 21 year old kid says on national TV, (“Momma’s Boys,” Mondays on NBC), “I found the girl I have been looking for my whole life!” Yeah right junior, six months ago you couldn’t get into a bar, let me know two years from now how you’re doing with Miss Love of your Life. It is a great show though, if just for the fact that the moms are so outrageously over the top, it will make you appreciate your own – call her…

Local Reality TV: Tapa Meze, Manhattan Beach Boulevard, MB, in the space which has changed hands several times over the past few years but most will remember as the old “BAG” (Manhattan Bar & Grill), will be featured in the TV show “Curiosity Quest” on PBS, tonight, Thursday, January 15, 7:30 p.m. Host Joel Greene will join head chef Colin Collville and owner Sam Gareebo in the kitchen for a lesson in Spanish/Middle Eastern fusion cuisine. I’ve eaten at TM twice – the first was for dinner. I shared about a dozen different tapas and mezes with a friend and they were all fantastic. The second was for lunch and I was a bit disappointed, so Colin, I’ll be watching how you direct your newest student and expect the third time to be the charm. Check out curiosityquest.org for more info on the show…

More Local Props: Brix, PCH, HB was recognized as one of the top 10 new Los Angeles area restaurants in the January issue of Los Angeles Magazine. The resto was also featured on KTLA on January 8. You can watch the clip at KTLA.com. Anisette in Santa Monica and BLT Steak in West Hollywood made the list as well to give you an idea of the company Brix is keeping. I love the new “Recession Menu” at Bar Brix, three courses for $20 from 5:30-9 p.m. on Sundays and Mondays as well as other weekly specials including half-priced selected wine bottles, free corkage on bottles bought at the Brix store on Mondays and Tuesdays, freebie “amuse-bouches,” (in French this literally means “mouth tease,” but in American they are simply appetizers), and more. Now we can talk about that midlife crisis: Actually, I’m on my third. The first happened during the four months prior to my turning 10. From 9 to 10 I was going from a one number person to a two number person and I lost my mind. I’m still looking for it. The second was when I was 27, quit my glamorous job in NYC and bought a one-way ticket to LA without having a place to live – or even knowing about Hermosa Beach. This third one is just getting started. Last week I dyed my hair red, not crazy Lucille Ball red but quite different from the dirty blond highlighted locks I’ve sported the past 36 years. That night I had to go gauge local reaction so I grabbed my Sprout friend and she and I headed over to Upper Manhattan on Highland, MB. Unfortunately it was Monday and closed so we went back to midtown to check out Mucho, formerly Michi, Manhattan Ave – every time I think of Mucho-Michi, that David Letterman Oscar gaffe comes to mind, “Uma, Oprah, Oprah, Uma…” The place was pretty packed for 9 p.m. on a Monday night and the first person I see is big Ron who I remember as the manager of Bora Bora, formerly Hilary’s Hole in the Wall, a dive bar which Hilary converted into an upscale Steak/Fusion resto, coincidentally back over by Upper Manhattan. Six degrees of DebL. The place is now closed so I can tell you how I really feel: Back about a year ago, my dining partner and I thoroughly enjoyed our evening that one time we ate there. Service was great, Ron was great, we had a beer at the bar while waiting for our table and the whole experience was enjoyable. Unfortunately, the food wasn’t great. Ron actually sat down with us and went through everything we had and what were our complaints, comp’d our meal and asked we give them another shot. Too late now. Back to Mucho: Katie Sprout and I decided to head to the bar area which is a well set-up social spot with low couches and tables, walls separate the dining areas to the left and behind. Since there are about 200 tequilas to choose from we figured we should try several margaritas just to make sure they were getting the recipes right. Oh yeah, we were happy. We made friends with the two girls at the table next to us and ended up chatting all night. It was a nice dynamic from ages 24 to mid 30s to 50 and fun to bounce our lives and ideas off each other – somehow all politics and religion aside, once you have a few friendly drinks and some good guac, we really all can get along. Before we knew it last call was upon us and we vowed to get back there for a proper dinner. By the way, it was only a coincidence Ron was there at the time, he normally works at Rock N’ Fish, Manhattan Beach Boulevard, which like Mucho and Shade Hotel is another of Mike Zislis’s enterprises. Thanks for recognizing me with the new ‘do and the great service. Call (310)374-4422 or check out muchomb.com for more info...

Movin’ On Up: The South Bay has lost two of its veteran barmen, Terrence Moriarity, Club Sushi and Dan “Digger” D’Amario, Beaches, Manhattan Beach Boulevard, MB. Both have gone Hollywood to open the new Club Sushi located in the Arclight Theatre Plaza on Sunset. I attended Digger’s last night at Beaches a couple of weeks ago. I got there early, around 9 p.m. and there were about a dozen people in the whole place, all from Boston, accents and nicknames flying around the room. We hunkered down at one corner of the bar and watched as over the next two hours the place became packed, shoulder to shoulder. Good times. Digger would like to thank everyone who came out that night and for the years of patronage and invites anyone who happens to be looking for a comfort zone up in the ‘Wood to stop by and say hello. A friendly face will be waiting…
